When we think about home safety, most of us immediately think of smoke detectors. But there's another device that's just as important—and in many ways even more critical—a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm.

Carbon monoxide is often called the "silent killer" because you can't see it, smell it, or taste it. Without a working carbon monoxide alarm, you may never know it's there until it becomes dangerous.

What Is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a gas produced whenever fuel burns. In most homes, it's created by appliances we use every day, including:

  • Gas furnaces

  • Gas water heaters

  • Fireplaces (wood or gas)

  • Gas stoves and ovens

  • Natural gas clothes dryers

  • Portable generators

  • Vehicles running inside an attached garage

Under normal conditions, these appliances vent carbon monoxide safely outdoors. However, if an appliance malfunctions, a vent becomes blocked, or equipment is used improperly, carbon monoxide can build up inside your home.

Why Is It So Dangerous?

Carbon monoxide enters your bloodstream when you breathe it in and prevents your body from getting the oxygen it needs.

One of the biggest dangers is that the early symptoms often look like the flu. You might experience:

How High Should They Be?

Here's something that surprises many homeowners:

Unlike smoke, carbon monoxide mixes evenly throughout the air in your home. That means carbon monoxide alarms do not have to be mounted on the ceiling.

Many manufacturers recommend installing them about 5 feet above the floor when wall-mounted because that's approximately breathing level and makes the alarm easier to test and maintain. Ceiling installation is also acceptable if that's what the manufacturer's instructions specify.

The most important rule is simple: always follow the installation instructions that came with your specific alarm.

Don't Forget Maintenance

Carbon monoxide alarms need a little attention to keep protecting your family.

Take a few minutes to:

  • Test each alarm once a month.

  • Replace batteries as needed (if your model uses replaceable batteries).

  • Gently vacuum dust from the alarm occasionally.

  • Replace the entire unit when it reaches the manufacturer's expiration date—typically every 5 to 10 years.

Most alarms have the expiration date printed right on the back.

Carbon monoxide alarms are one of the least expensive safety devices you can buy, yet they provide protection from a danger you can't detect on your own.
